Lil Wayne Says Drake Gets Hate Because He’s ‘Light-Skinned’

Lil Wayne recently opened up about his decision to sign Drake and Nicki Minaj to Young Money Entertainment during a conversation on The Richard Sherman Podcast. Reflecting on his artist signing process, Wayne credited Birdman for the initiative.

In the podcast episode, Wayne expressed pride in witnessing the success of Drake and Minaj, likening the experience to that of a “proud father.” When asked about the criticism Drake faces, Wayne attributed it to historical biases.

“He red, he light-skinned,” Wayne explained, adding, “That’s history. That’s just American history. How I know is because I’m not light-skinned. I hated on all light-skinned dudes in school. So yeah, it’s American history, man.”

Drake himself has addressed the perception of his light skin in his music, notably on the 2018 single “Nonstop.” However, he has also discussed the challenges he faced due to the “light-skinned complex” early in his career, sharing experiences where people questioned his racial identity.
