Taylor Swift became the first recipient of the MTV Video Music Awards’ Artist Director Honors at the 2026 ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 27, receiving the inaugural award for her work behind the camera and contributions to music-video storytelling. Dakota Johnson presented Swift with the honor at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

Johnson, who stars alongside Colin Farrell in Swift’s “Patient Zero” music video, introduced the singer before a montage highlighting Swift’s directing work played during the ceremony. She described Swift as a storyteller who has spent much of her life creating stories and building worlds through music videos.

In her acceptance speech, Swift recalled that she began making and appearing in music videos about 20 years ago. She said she has been involved in roughly 60 music videos throughout her career, including 18 that she wrote and directed herself.

Swift also credited the fans who have followed her visual work, saying their interest in music videos has made directing especially rewarding for her. She thanked the people who had worked alongside her on her various projects and said she had learned something from everyone involved.

The honor recognizes Swift’s sustained work as a music-video director, including projects such as “The Man,” “cardigan,” “willow,” “All Too Well: The Short Film,” “Anti-Hero,” “Bejeweled,” “Fortnight,” “I Can See You,” “The Fate of Ophelia” and “Opalite.” She previously won the VMAs’ Best Direction award for “The Man” in 2020 and again for “All Too Well: The Short Film” in 2022.

After thanking the fans, Swift used the moment to introduce the world premiere of her latest music video, “Patient Zero.” The visual stars Johnson and Farrell and features cinematography by Oscar-winning filmmaker Emmanuel Lubezki.

“Patient Zero” is part of The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, the expanded edition of Swift’s 2025 album that was released Sept. 25. The new edition includes four additional songs: “Patient Zero,” “Cleveland!,” “Pink Clouding” and “Babylon.”

Swift entered the 2026 VMAs with 11 nominations, including Video of the Year, Artist of the Year and Best Pop. She also won Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia” and Best Direction for “Opalite” during the ceremony.

The Artist Director Honors was introduced for the 2026 VMAs as a new award recognizing artists whose directorial work has expanded the possibilities of music videos and visual storytelling. Swift’s presentation of the inaugural trophy came as part of a ceremony hosted by Snoop Dogg and broadcast from Los Angeles on CBS and MTV, with streaming available on Paramount+.
