Madonna reflected on the early days of her MTV Video Music Awards history while accepting Artist of the Year at the 2026 ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 27. The singer recalled being told that her career was over after her memorable performance at the inaugural VMAs in 1984, more than four decades before she returned to the stage to collect the latest honor.

Madonna opened her acceptance speech with a joke, thanking her fingers because, as she put it, she could always count on them. She then took the audience back to her first VMAs performance of “Like a Virgin,” when a shoe came off during the routine and she improvised onstage.

According to Madonna’s recollection, she went backstage after the performance feeling proud of what she had done, only for her manager to tell her that her career was over. She explained that the incident involved her stiletto falling off and a move she made while trying to recover from the mishap, which resulted in part of her outfit shifting during the performance.

More than 40 years later, Madonna used the moment to discuss the creative process behind her latest era. She said she had spent the previous year and a half finding herself, believing in herself and making the music she wanted to make. She described that process as part of what being an artist means to her.

Madonna won Artist of the Year over a field that included Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, Sabrina Carpenter and Morgan Wallen. The award was one of several honors she received during the ceremony after entering the night as the most-nominated artist with 13 nominations.

The win followed a major opening performance from Madonna, marking her first live performance at the VMAs in 23 years. She opened the ceremony with material from her Confessions II era before being joined by Sabrina Carpenter for “Bring Your Love” and Charli xcx for “Danceteria Afterhours.”

Madonna also won Best Collaboration alongside Carpenter for “Bring Your Love,” while “Confessions II – The Film” collected several additional awards during the ceremony. Her 2026 VMAs campaign added to a career that already included 19 previous VMA wins before this year’s ceremony.

The 2026 VMAs were hosted by Snoop Dogg at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater and broadcast live on CBS and MTV, with streaming available through Paramount+. The ceremony also featured Taylor Swift’s Video of the Year win, Nirvana’s Video Vanguard Award and tributes to George Michael and Dolly Parton.
