Cardi B Clarifies ‘Coach Bag’ Line in “Like What” Freestyle, Citing Cam’ron Reference

Cardi B recently addressed the controversy surrounding a line in her latest freestyle, “Like What,” where she referenced a Coach bag, explaining that it was a nod to a classic Cam’ron lyric.

In her freestyle released on Friday, Cardi included the line, “Like a Coach bag, baby, this ain’t what you want,” which drew criticism from some fans who interpreted it as a diss towards the popular bag brand.

During an Instagram Live session on Friday night, Cardi addressed the misunderstanding, expressing surprise at the backlash and clarifying the inspiration behind the line. She recounted her fond memories of wearing Coach rain boots during her high school days, highlighting her connection to the brand. However, she pointed to Cam’ron and Vado’s 2011 track “Hey Muma” as the true source of inspiration for the lyric.

In “Hey Muma,” Cam’ron raps, “Still riding coach, need a Coach bag,” a line that sparked a trend of people ditching Coach items. Cardi, a self-proclaimed Dipset fan, revealed that she was paying homage to this cultural moment in her freestyle.

“When I was doing this song, that’s what I was thinking about,” Cardi explained. “It’s like, ‘Bitch, do you want that or do you want this? You want a Chanel or you want this bag?’”

Despite the misunderstanding, Cardi emphasized that her intention was not to offend anyone but rather to reflect the cultural context of New York City. She assured her fans that she holds no ill will towards Coach, even stating her intention to purchase a Coach bag the following day.

In response to Cardi’s clarification, Coach tweeted their support for the rapper, expressing their love for her. Cardi reciprocated the sentiment with a message of appreciation and several emojis, indicating that there were no hard feelings between her and the fashion house.
