M & J Turn Unrequited Love Into “Not a Love Song”
Australian duo M & J return with “Not a Love Song,” a personal reflection on the experience of caring for someone when those feelings are not returned.
The song draws from a real experience involving one half of the duo. What began as the possibility of a new relationship also seemed like the perfect inspiration for a love song. There was someone they cared about, and the hope was to turn those feelings into music.

“Not a Love Song” captures the realization that sometimes, no matter what you do, someone may simply not feel the same way. The song explores the disappointment that comes when hopes for a relationship fail to become reality.
Rather than forcing the story into a romantic ending, M & J allow the music to reflect what actually happened. The love song that was imagined never materialized because the relationship did not become what was hoped for. What emerged instead was “Not a Love Song.”
At its heart, the track is about unrequited love, expectations and accepting when a connection is not meant to become what you imagined. It takes a deeply personal experience and turns it into something listeners can recognize in their own lives.
For M & J, the song serves as a reminder that not every relationship becomes a love story. Sometimes, the most honest song is the one that admits it didn’t work out.
