Yesu Yeni Makes Room for Healing and Renewal on “Set Us Free”

Cameroon-based Afrobeat Gospel artist Yesu Yeni returns with “Set Us Free,” the second focus track from his debut album, DONE WITH THE DISGUISE. Following the support for “Ya Qalbi (My Heart),” the new single turns toward faith, mercy, and the possibility of starting again. Rooted in Gospel soul, it carries a message of restoration for anyone facing personal struggles.

“Set Us Free” begins with an admission of carrying an unnamed burden. The opening lines, “I was carrying a weight I couldn’t name / Then mercy found me in the middle of the flame,” introduce a personal moment of vulnerability. From there, the song moves from quiet reflection toward a more open expression of faith, presenting mercy as a source of relief when life becomes difficult.

The song’s central message extends beyond individual testimony. Yesu Yeni invites listeners to bring their pain, exhaustion, and struggles without feeling the need to hide them. “If you’re tired, bring the tired / If you’re hurting, bring the scars / You are welcome as you are,” he sings. The words give the track a welcoming, congregational quality, making its message feel like an invitation rather than a demand.

That sense of restoration reaches its clearest expression in the chorus: “Jesus set us free, broke the chain inside / Turned our mourning into morning, gave us room to rise.” The lyrics connect freedom with an inner transformation, moving from sorrow toward renewed hope. Through its testimony-driven writing, the song presents faith as a place where people can confront their struggles and find the strength to move forward.

Beyond his music, Yesu Yeni works as a university lecturer in Cameroon and is based in Buea. His connection to music stretches back to his undergraduate years, when he hosted the Hope Awards musical showcase and wrote 52 songs. After pursuing an academic path toward a PhD, he returned to music as a way to honour his faith in Jesus Christ.

The wider album, DONE WITH THE DISGUISE, also carries a deeply personal meaning. Its cover pays tribute to Yesu Yeni’s late parents. His mother was a gifted singer who never had the opportunity to produce her songs, while his father was a devoted lover of music. The project honours their legacy while giving Yesu Yeni a platform to express his own beliefs through song.
