While awaiting trial in county jail, he encountered a former championship boxer serving a life sentence under New York’s three-strikes drug laws. Although the system viewed him only through the lens of his criminal record, Catalano experienced something entirely different.

When a notoriously violent inmate targeted him inside the jail, the former boxer intervened, placing himself between danger and a stranger he barely knew.
