Violet Grohl has taken on The Cure for her debut appearance on triple j’s Like a Version, performing a stripped-down acoustic rendition of “High,” the lead single from the British band’s 1992 album Wish. The performance was released on Sept. 4 as part of the Australian radio program’s weekly cover series.

Grohl’s version removes much of the layered instrumentation associated with the original recording and centers on her vocals and acoustic guitar. Rather than closely reproducing Robert Smith’s delivery, she gives the song a more intimate arrangement that places the lyrics and melody at the forefront.

Speaking with triple j, Grohl explained that “High” has been one of her favorite Cure songs for years. She said she was drawn to its instrumental arrangement and the imagery in its lyrics, describing the song as a sweet love song with a sense of youthful joy.

Grohl also discussed her longstanding connection to The Cure, saying that she first became interested in the group around the age of 12 or 13 after hearing “Friday I’m in Love.” She has since cited the band and frontman Robert Smith as important influences on her musical tastes.

The Like a Version appearance also featured Grohl performing her own song “595” acoustically. The track is the third single from her debut album Be Sweet to Me, which was released in May and reflects her interest in alternative rock sounds associated with the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The session places Grohl among a series of recent Like a Version performers who have revisited influential alternative and rock songs. Recent installments have included Becca Hatch covering Sade’s “Smooth Operator” and Slayyyter performing Hole’s “Violet.”
