Sven Curth Introduces First-Ever Live Band Album With The Sven Curth Trio

Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sven Curth unveils a new chapter in his catalog with a live recording captured at one of upstate New York’s beloved music hubs. The project “Live at your local Waterhole” marks his fifth official album release and is his first full-length live performance recorded with a band.

The idea for the trio came together organically. After being invited to participate in a local concert series, Curth decided it was time to assemble a group that could bring his material to life on stage. Longtime musical acquaintances drummer Kyle Murray and bassist Colin Dehond stepped in, and what began as a simple backing lineup quickly evolved into a cohesive unit. As the performances continued, guest musicians occasionally joined the fold, expanding the sonic landscape.

This particular recording documents one of those evenings, a warm August night filled with lively energy and an engaged audience. Keyboardist Chris Carballeira added another dimension to the show, managing to rehearse just once with the group before stepping onstage.

Curth’s musical sensibilities stretch across a wide spectrum. His inspirations span the grit of Tom Waits, the adventurous spirit of Charles Mingus, the melodic charm of Hall & Oates, the soul of B.B. King, the roots-driven storytelling of Del McCoury and Robert Earl Keen, the swing of Bob Wills, and even the unconventional edge of Primus. Rather than stay confined to a single lane, he embraces stylistic exploration.

The album reflects that range. The set opens with the stripped-down, Americana-leaning “How Come,” easing listeners into an intimate atmosphere. “Rain” leans into contemplative blues territory, while “My Baby Hates Me When She’s Drinking” injects humor and brisk swing rhythms. The expansive improvisation found in “Wonder What” showcases the band’s ability to stretch emotionally and musically. Throughout the performance, melody, musicianship, and storytelling remain at the forefront.

The venue itself adds to the significance of the release. The Waterhole in Saranac Lake, NY, has built a reputation over decades as a gathering place for noteworthy acts and dedicated music fans. Recording the album there ties the project to a long-standing tradition of live performance and community.

Production remained intentionally straightforward. The performance was captured directly from the digital soundboard, preserving the raw character of the night. Curth handled initial mixes before collaborating with longtime friend and engineer Tom Varga, who refined the sound using a collection of analog and tube gear. Final mastering was completed on analog tape by Fred Kevorkian of Kevorkian Mastering Inc., adding warmth and depth to the record.

An official album release celebration is scheduled at the same venue on March 28, 2026, bringing the music back to the stage where it was first documented.

Drummer Kyle Murray describes the recording as “I think these tracks represent a great and adorable snapshot of a few people having a lot of fun playing your music,” capturing the spirit behind the performance.

This live release also represents Curth’s tenth collection of original recordings overall. While he may not measure success through mainstream metrics, his commitment to songwriting and performance has remained steady. Regional recognition and meaningful collaborations have marked his journey, but more than anything, it is the craft itself that drives him forward.

For Curth, music remains a lifelong dedication. As a vocalist, guitarist, and banjo player, he balances careful attention to lyric writing with an ongoing effort to refine his instrumental skills. His catalog moves fluidly between social commentary, wit, introspection, and lighthearted storytelling, always guided by a desire to connect.

At a time when technology continues to reshape the creative landscape, this release stands as a reminder of the power of musicians sharing space, sound, and spontaneity. It is a live document rooted in presence, chemistry, and human expression.
