PhillBill Brings Cameroonian Rhythms to Modern Afropop With His Bikossa Sound

Cameroonian singer, songwriter, and producer PhillBill is stepping further into the spotlight with Bikossa, a sound that connects traditional rhythms with modern Afropop and Amapiano. His single “Tètèri” has surpassed 2.4 million YouTube views since its March 2026 release. Meanwhile, his recent recognition includes winning Best Central African Artist at the Afromada Music Awards 2026. After years of shaping hits behind the scenes, PhillBill is building his identity as an artist with a sound rooted in Cameroonian musical culture.

Born Diyani Bill Munyenge in Buea, PhillBill developed his musical foundation through formal studies and hands on experience. He studied Performing and Visual Arts at the University of Buea before training as a producer in Nigeria. He later returned to Cameroon and spent years working with the group Ridimz before pursuing a solo career. Under the name PhillBill Beatz, he produced music for artists including Blanche Bailly, Ko-C, Daphne, and Mimie. He also contributed to Locko’s album Era, which earned Gold certification in France.

His work as a producer has helped shape his approach to music. However, PhillBill’s ambitions extend beyond creating records for other artists. Through Bikossa, he brings together Makossa, Bensikin, Assiko, and Mangambeu with contemporary Afropop and Amapiano influences. The result is a sound that celebrates local musical traditions while connecting them with modern production. As PhillBill explains, “My mission is to revitalise the old melodies we grew up listening and dancing to.”

His growing recognition has also brought attention to his work beyond Cameroon. In August 2026, BBC World Service’s This Is Africa devoted an episode to his career. He was also nominated for the TRACE Awards in 2025. Then, in October 2026, he won Best Central African Artist at the Afromada Music Awards in Madagascar. These milestones reflect growing interest in his music and his efforts to bring Cameroonian sounds to wider audiences.

One of the clearest examples of Bikossa is “Tètèri,” a track from his 2025 EP, The SoundMan. The title refers to a fixed, shining point in the night sky, reflecting the song’s message of self belief and perseverance. Through its lyrics, the track encourages listeners to keep going through criticism and difficult times. It also challenges them to avoid comparing their progress with others and remain true to their own path. The official music video complements this message with dance and costumes that celebrate Cameroonian culture. Since its release in March 2026, the video has attracted more than 2.4 million YouTube views.

Live performance remains another important part of PhillBill’s artistic identity. He performs with a seven piece band, bringing his music to the stage through a fully live setup. His debut EP, The SoundMan, launched with a sold out concert at the Institut Français du Cameroun in Douala in 2025. He later headlined a show in Essen, Germany. Now, he is preparing to return home for The Return of the SoundMan at Molyko Omnisport Stadium in Buea on December 5, 2026, followed by a performance in Kumba on December 19.

With new music planned for January 2027, PhillBill is continuing to develop a musical identity that connects his production background with his own artistic vision. His journey from behind the scenes hitmaker to solo performer reflects a wider commitment to preserving and reimagining Cameroonian rhythms. Through Bikossa, he is bringing familiar melodies into a contemporary setting while keeping their cultural roots at the centre. As his audience grows, PhillBill is making a case for a modern African sound that looks forward without leaving its history behind.
