Stephani Ezatoff Honors Legacy with Powerful Rendition of “Precious Lord Take My Hand”

Gospel vocalist Stephani Ezatoff has released a stirring and reverent new recording of the timeless hymn “Precious Lord Take My Hand,” produced in Nashville with a legendary ensemble of musicians. Out now, the single honors the profound legacy of its composer, Reverend Thomas A. Dorsey, known as “The Father of Gospel Music”, while infusing the classic with heartfelt, contemporary vitality.
Produced by Brian Speer of the Speer Family, the recording features Johnny Minick (The Happy Goodman Family) on Rhodes Piano and Hammond B3 Organ, alongside background vocals from Angela Primm, Gale West, Johnny Minick, and Aaron Minick. Nashville session veterans Gary Lunn and Dave Cleveland provide guitar and bass, resulting in what Ezatoff describes as “a 24-carat gold, powerhouse production.”

Written in 1932 from a place of profound grief after the loss of his wife and newborn son, “Precious Lord Take My Hand” has become a gospel standard, recorded by icons from Mahalia Jackson to Aretha Franklin. Ezatoff approached the hymn with deep reverence for its history and spiritual weight. “It was vital to respect Reverend Dorsey’s story and understand the incredibly tragic place from which his song was written,” she explains. “The recording was treated with great reverence, delivered with dignity and grace.”
The track masterfully bridges tradition and modernity, preserving the soulful, vintage sound of the Hammond B3 while introducing a dynamic, contemporary energy. Ezatoff’s connection to the hymn runs deep, rooted in a lifelong appreciation for gospel music’s enduring power. “From the time I was a little girl, these traditional hymns have resonated with me,” she shares. “Even though ‘Precious Lord’ was written nearly one hundred years ago, its message is still extraordinarily powerful.”
For Ezatoff, the recording also reflects the natural fusion of blues and gospel in her own musical expression—a legacy she traces back to Dorsey’s own journey from blues musician to gospel composer. “The infusion of the blues into my Gospel music is purely the leading of the Holy Spirit,” she notes. “I hope we made Reverend Dorsey proud.”
