Sydney-based singer-songwriter LEIANNA continues building momentum with “SAILS,” a track that captures the heart of her evolving sound and creative identity. Blending folk, soul, funk, R&B, and rock influences, the song stands as one of the defining moments from her EP The Reference Tracks.

Created during her studies at the Australian Institute of Music, the project was built through collaboration with classmates who contributed across instrumentation, production, and engineering. LEIANNA directed the creative process while working closely with collaborators Phoebe East and Aiden Ferguson-Tait, allowing her to focus fully on composition and performance while the technical side of the recordings came together around her vision.

“SAILS” represents a meeting point between many of the influences that shaped LEIANNA as an artist. Raised with classical music training and inspired by artists spanning multiple generations, her sound draws from the songwriting traditions of Fleetwood Mac, Queen, and Bill Withers, while also carrying elements of folk and soul inspired by Hozier, The Dubliners, Michael Jackson, Lauryn Hill, and Al Green.

Out of all the songs connected to the project, LEIANNA views “SAILS” as the clearest reflection of those influences merging into her own artistic voice. The track carries a strong emotional connection for her, not only because it was the first song recorded for the EP, but because it reflects the collaborative energy shared by the people around her during its creation.

Originally from Newcastle, Australia, LEIANNA’s move to Sydney marked a major turning point in both her personal and musical journey. After years of developing through church performance, violin training beginning at age three, and musical theatre education, she eventually established herself within Australia’s live music circuit. Over the past year alone, she has performed more than 60 live shows, building a reputation for emotionally driven performances that range from intimate acoustic sets to larger arrangements featuring brass and strings.

That connection to live music sits at the center of “SAILS.” For LEIANNA, the song represents finding a sense of belonging — both musically and personally. It reflects the process of discovering where she fits within the live music world and embracing the confidence to fully express herself through performance.

With “SAILS,” LEIANNA continues shaping a sound that feels deeply personal while remaining open and relatable, blending rich musical influences with storytelling rooted in authenticity and connection.
