Latin Jazz Legend Eddie Palmieri to Be Featured in Upcoming Documentary & More Uplifting Moments in Latin Music
A new documentary feature film titled Eddie Palmieri: Sweet Sweet Sugar is in the works, charting the life and legacy of legendary Latin jazz pianist and bandleader Eddie Palmieri. Directed by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Omar Acosta, the documentary will focus on Palmieri’s influence on salsa and Latin jazz — from his beginnings in Spanish Harlem and the Bronx through his work that helped shape the genre’s global reach. The project has full access to Palmieri’s music catalog as well as rare archival footage, and is being produced by Goldcrest Films in partnership with Palmieri’s estate, with producer credits to David Kennedy and Nick Quested. Palmieri won multiple Grammy Awards across his decades-long career and became celebrated for blending jazz improvisation with Afro-Caribbean rhythms, a contribution widely recognized as foundational to contemporary Latin music.

The announcement of the documentary arrives amid other notable moments in Latin music this week, including Mexican star Peso Pluma joining Adidas as a global ambassador and Puerto Rican artists Guaynaa and Lele Pons introducing their newborn daughter, Eloísa, on social media.
Palmieri passed away in August 2025 at age 88, leaving behind a legacy as one of Latin jazz’s most influential figures, and Sweet Sweet Sugar aims to spotlight his pioneering work and cultural impact for new and longtime music fans alike.
