Multi-instrumentalist and composer Kylie unveils her ambitious debut album, a groundbreaking fusion of Japanese jazz fusion, progressive rhythms, and cinematic soundscapes that chronicles her transformative journey between Hong Kong and the UK. This collection represents a bold artistic statement bridging Eastern and Western musical traditions.

The album’s lead single “Rebirth 重生” serves as a sonic voyage of resilience, capturing life’s uncertainty through intricate odd time signatures and hypnotic phrasing reminiscent of Chick Corea’s “Spain.” Inspired by Life of Pi, the track’s post-rock-infused second half builds to an emotionally charged climax that resonates powerfully with the Hong Kong diaspora in the UK, blending jazz fusion’s technical brilliance with post-rock’s cathartic emotional release.

“Merry-Go-Round of Life 人生のメリーゴーランド” showcases Kylie’s collaborative artistry as she and her jazz big band reimagine Joe Hisaishi’s iconic composition through intricate jazz harmonies and nostalgic storytelling. The piece features Kylie’s expressive piano solo reflecting childhood memories in To Kwa Wan, followed by Victor Wu’s virtuosic flute performance, before climaxing with Kylie’s electrifying keytar solo inspired by classic video games like Sonic the Hedgehog, creating a unique fusion of nostalgia and retro gaming energy.

The album’s crown jewel, “Nightingale 小夜啼鳥,” was recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios and reinterprets Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Nightingale and the Emperor” through a haunting duet between Natasha Petrović and Victor Wu, illustrating the Emperor’s journey from wonder to neglect before achieving bittersweet redemption.

The album cover and vinyl sleeve, designed by renowned Hong Kong illustrator Don Mak, draws inspiration from The Beatles’ iconic Abbey Road image, showing Kylie crossing the famous street as a symbol of Hongkongers transitioning from neon-lit urban landscapes to boldly embracing new chapters in the UK.
