JMERGZ Turns the Alphabet Into a Rap Challenge on “Alphabet Soup”
Australian independent artist JMERGZ turns language into a lyrical game on “Alphabet Soup,” a playful UK rap track featured on the EP My Space. Built around an unusual writing challenge, the song asks how far rap can be pushed when every line has to follow an alphabetical rule. The result is a technical display of vocabulary, alliteration, rhythm, and wordplay that never takes itself too seriously.

The concept is simple but demanding. Throughout the main section of the rap, each line is constructed using words beginning with the same designated letter of the alphabet. That restriction forces JMERGZ to think beyond conventional lyric writing, finding combinations that can work both on the page and within the rhythm of the track.
What makes “Alphabet Soup” stand out is the balance between technique and playfulness. JMERGZ packs the verses with rapid-fire phrases, tongue-twisting combinations, and deliberately unusual lines. Some of the word choices are strange by design, adding to the humour while demonstrating just how much creative room exists inside a seemingly rigid concept.
That approach also gives the track a different kind of lyrical focus. There is no need to force the concept into a conventional narrative. The words themselves become the subject, with rhythm and sound helping hold together combinations that might look completely unexpected outside the music. Alliteration becomes a musical tool, while vocabulary becomes part of the beat.
“Alphabet Soup” also reflects JMERGZ’s willingness to experiment across his catalogue. Featured on My Space, the track presents a more unconventional side of his approach to UK rap and highlights an interest in ideas that challenge standard songwriting structures.
