Macondo Park, the temporary city created around Shakira’s Madrid residency, is set to open to fans on Friday, Sept. 18, alongside the first concert of her 12-show run at Iberdrola Music. The project has transformed the Villaverde site into a large-scale entertainment and cultural space built around the Colombian singer’s Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour.

The name Macondo comes from the fictional town in Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude. The connection reflects Shakira’s Colombian roots and the residency’s wider focus on Spanish-language and Latin American culture.

The site covers a large area and has been developed as more than a concert venue. Organizers have spent about 16 months preparing the project, with roughly 10,000 people involved in its construction and operation. The temporary infrastructure includes a purpose-built concert space designed to accommodate tens of thousands of people for each show.

Macondo Park is organized around a series of themed pavilions dedicated to different aspects of Latin culture. La Biblioteca, or The Library, is one of the featured spaces and is inspired by García Márquez. It includes a bookstore, café, reading activities and appearances by writers, with the literary program scheduled to feature 24 authors.

Another part of the park is Macondito, a space created for younger visitors. The wider complex also includes areas devoted to food, fashion, art, dance and emerging musical talent, extending the experience beyond Shakira’s nightly performances.

The residency has also brought Colombian cultural traditions to Madrid. A delegation from the Barranquilla Carnival arrived in the Spanish capital ahead of the opening, adding performances and cultural elements connected to one of Colombia’s best-known celebrations.

Shakira has been involved in preparations for the temporary city and visited the site shortly before opening. Live Nation Spain president Pino Sagliocco said the singer was closely examining the details of the venue as the final preparations were completed.

The residency is scheduled to run across four weekends, beginning Sept. 18 and continuing through October. The announced dates are Sept. 18, 19, 20, 22, 23, 25, 26, 27 and 28, followed by Oct. 1, 2 and 3. Reports have indicated that the shows are expected to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to Madrid.

The Macondo Park programming is part of the broader “ES LATINA” concept surrounding the residency, which brings together music, literature, gastronomy, fashion and other cultural activities. The project is scheduled to operate during the concert dates, giving ticket holders access to the temporary city before and around Shakira’s performances.

With the first concert approaching on Sept. 18, Macondo Park is now completing its final preparations for Shakira’s Madrid residency, which is expected to bring the Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran era to the Spanish capital through October.
