Lil Baby Is Open to ‘Stepping Out of the Box’ to Collab With Sabrina Carpenter: ‘I Could Make It Work’
Lil Baby is open to exploring a musical collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter, revealing that he would be willing to move beyond his usual creative approach to work with the pop star. The Atlanta rapper discussed the possibility during an appearance on The New York Times’ Popcast, where he spoke about expanding his musical range and becoming more receptive to collaborations outside hip-hop.
During the interview, Lil Baby explained that he is gradually becoming more comfortable stepping outside his established sound. “I’m still in that box a little bit, but I’m more open to stepping out of the box,” he said. “The box is bigger. As I step out a little bit, the box gets bigger.”

The rapper specifically mentioned Carpenter as an artist he could imagine working with, although he acknowledged that he does not currently have a song prepared for her. He said a collaboration could develop through a studio session or by receiving a track from the singer.
“Even a Sabrina Carpenter — just say, for instance, in my head, I don’t have a song on my hard drive to send to her,” Lil Baby explained. “But if we sit there and create something, or she sends me something, I feel like I could make it work.”
The comments come as cross-genre collaborations between rappers and pop singers have become less common in mainstream music. In recent years, artists including Camila Cabello have continued to explore the format, working with Drake and Playboi Carti on tracks released in 2024. Dua Lipa’s remix of “Levitating,” featuring DaBaby, also became a major commercial success, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2021.
Carpenter has previously worked with rappers, including Saweetie on “I Can’t Stop Me,” which appeared on her 2019 project Singular: Act II. The singer has also built a major pop presence through releases including Short n’ Sweet and Man’s Best Friend, alongside chart success and high-profile performances.
Lil Baby’s comments arrive ahead of his upcoming album Fresh, scheduled for release on November 6, 2026. The project is expected to feature appearances from Future, Young Thug and Rylo Rodriguez, with no pop-star collaborations currently announced. Its lead single, “Dead Fresh,” features Pharrell Williams.
The rapper’s Popcast conversation also touched on his creative process, career development and willingness to work with new collaborators. His remarks about Carpenter have not confirmed that a song is in progress, but they indicate that he is open to the possibility if the right musical idea comes together.
