Taylor Swift dedicated her 2026 MTV Video Music Awards Video of the Year win to Dolly Parton during an emotional acceptance speech Sunday night, Sept. 27. Swift won the night’s top prize for “The Fate of Ophelia” and used the moment to honor Parton, who died Aug. 25 at age 80.

After receiving the Moon Person from host Snoop Dogg, Swift thanked the fans who voted for “The Fate of Ophelia” and spoke about making the video as one continuous shot. She also acknowledged choreographer Mandy Moore and other collaborators who helped bring the visual to life.

Swift then dedicated the award to Parton, referring to the country icon as the “ultimate showgirl.” She also reflected on Parton’s place in music and culture, saying audiences had been fortunate to share the planet with her.

The tribute came during a VMAs ceremony that had already featured a special celebration of Parton. Kacey Musgraves performed Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” during the show, adding another tribute to the late singer-songwriter.

Swift’s Video of the Year win came for “The Fate of Ophelia,” which competed against videos from Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, GENER8ION featuring Yung Lean, Madonna and Sabrina Carpenter. The award was one of two competitive Moon Person trophies Swift received during the ceremony.

Earlier in the evening, Swift received the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, recognizing her work behind the camera and her involvement in shaping her music videos. The honor also added to her record total of VMA wins, making her the most-awarded artist in the history of the ceremony.

Swift entered the 2026 VMAs with 11 nominations, including categories for Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Visual Effects. She ultimately collected the Artist Director Honors, Best Direction for “Opalite” and Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia.”

The ceremony also included the world premiere of Swift’s “Patient Zero” music video, directed by Swift and starring Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell. The video was announced as part of the VMAs broadcast and arrived alongside Swift’s latest music release.

The 2026 VMAs were held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and aired live on CBS and MTV, with streaming available through Paramount+. The ceremony was hosted by Snoop Dogg and also featured performances and tributes honoring artists from different generations, including Madonna, Nirvana and Dolly Parton.
