Ben Saunders, the Dutch singer who won the first season of The Voice of Holland, has died at the age of 43. Saunders was found dead Tuesday, Sept. 15, at Rijkerswoerdse Plassen, a recreational lake near Arnhem in the Netherlands. Police recovered a body from the lake at about 1:20 p.m. local time after Saunders had been reported missing.

Authorities have ruled out foul play, while the cause of death has not been disclosed. Police confirmed that a body had been recovered and said their investigation determined that no crime was involved.

Saunders became widely known in 2011 when he competed on the inaugural season of The Voice of Holland, the original version of the international The Voice franchise. His blind audition featured a performance of Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody,” and he went on to win the competition with 59% of the public vote.

His winning single, “Kill for a Broken Heart,” reached No. 4 on the Dutch Top 40, while his debut album, You Thought You Knew Me By Now, topped the Dutch album chart after its release in April 2011. Saunders followed it with his second album, Heart & Soul, in 2012.

Following his success on the show, Saunders continued making music while also returning to his work as a tattoo artist. He later operated a tattoo business with his brother, Dean Saunders, who also won a Dutch television talent competition in 2011.

News of Saunders’ death prompted tributes from family members and people connected to The Voice of Holland. His brother Dean shared a childhood photograph of the pair on Instagram and confirmed his death in an emotional tribute. Former The Voice of Holland coach Marco Borsato also shared photographs and footage of Saunders, remembering their time together on the program.

Saunders’ death comes more than 15 years after his victory helped launch the international The Voice format. The Voice of Holland premiered in 2010 and subsequently inspired adaptations in numerous countries, including the United States, United Kingdom and Australia.

As of Sept. 17, authorities have not publicly disclosed a cause of death. Saunders is survived by his fiancée, Janita, and his children.
