Rodrigo y Gabriela Add Lyrics & Vocals for the First Time in ‘OurHome,’ in Something ‘Very Powerful’

Rodrigo y Gabriela have introduced a new element to their music with “Somos Como Tú,” the first song in their more than two-decade career to feature lyrics and vocals from the Mexican guitar duo. The track appears on their new album, OurHome, which was released Sept. 18, 2026, through ATO Records.

“Somos Como Tú,” which translates to “We Are Like You,” was written by Rodrigo Sánchez in 2015 while he was living in Paris. The song addresses migration, displacement, dignity and shared humanity, focusing on people searching for a path and a place to belong. Sánchez said the duo had always liked the song but struggled to find an arrangement that sounded like Rodrigo y Gabriela.

The musicians returned to the song while working on OurHome, eventually recording a version that Sánchez described as “very powerful and honest.” Gabriela Quintero contributes a rapid-fire vocal response to Sánchez’s lead, while hand percussion and vocals from a group of local fans add to the recording.

The vocal debut marks a significant change for a duo whose music has primarily been built around the interplay of two acoustic guitars. Rodrigo y Gabriela developed their international career through instrumental performances that combine Latin rhythms with influences from their early love of heavy metal.

OurHome is an 11-track album recorded and produced by Sánchez and Quintero at NK Sound Tokyo in Japan. The record follows their 2023 album In Between Thoughts…A New World and returns to the acoustic approach that has been central to much of their work.

Japan also provided inspiration for several of the album’s songs. The duo recorded “Akatsuki” with Japanese jazz pianist Hiromi, while other collaborations on the album include former Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman, cellist Hiyori Okuda and Kyoto-based guitarist and composer Yukihiro Atsumi.

The album’s title track was written by Sánchez following the death of the duo’s longtime studio cat, Pelusa. Quintero told NPR that the song became the starting point for the album after a period when the pair had been struggling creatively.

“Somos Como Tú” follows the album’s earlier releases, including “Monster,” which was inspired by Japanese manga artist Naoki Urasawa’s psychological thriller of the same name. Urasawa later created the official music video for the song after discovering that the duo had written it in connection with his work.

Rodrigo y Gabriela are now preparing to take OurHome on tour. Their North American run is scheduled to begin Sept. 30 in Dallas, with stops including Mexico City on Oct. 6 and 7, as well as dates in Washington, D.C., New York, San Francisco and Seattle.
