J. Cole Recalls Recording ‘Blueprint 3’ Verse In Front of Jay-Z and Beyoncé: ‘I’m Built for This’

In a recent interview, J. Cole reflected on his experience recording his verse for Jay-Z’s track “A Star Is Born” from the 2009 album The Blueprint 3. He recalled the initial call from Mark Pitts informing him of Jay-Z’s interest in having him feature on the song. Despite his initial reservations about being directed to contribute, J. Cole recognized the significance of the opportunity with Jay-Z and Kanye West involved.

Arriving at the studio, J. Cole was surprised to find Beyoncé present alongside Jay-Z and Young Guru. After an extensive listening session where Jay-Z played numerous tracks, they proceeded to work on “A Star Is Born.” J. Cole penned his verse in approximately 45 minutes, aiming to authentically represent his origins from Fayetteville, North Carolina. He recalled the moment he delivered his verse, noting that Jay-Z and Young Guru’s reactions indicated their approval.

This collaboration not only marked a pivotal moment in J. Cole’s career but also solidified his association with Roc Nation, leading to his eventual signing. Reflecting on the experience, J. Cole expressed immense gratitude, considering it a defining achievement in his journey.
